Freckles may look cute on the curly haired 5-year old but any skin discolourations is a bane to an adult's life. Who would have thought that more people seeking to improve their looks are more concerned about pigmentation than they are with wrinkles? There are many over-the-counter skin lighteners that claim to even out, brighten and lighten facial skin, and though they may have some noticeable effect with mild conditions, most hyperpigmentations need a little more help.
What Causes Hyperpigmentations?
Hormonal or pregnancy pigmentation (Melasma or Chloasma)
- Caused by hormonal fluctuations during pregnancy or contraceptive use
- Has a mask-like appearance over the forehead, cheeks, and upper chin
- Common in darker skins
Post-inflammatory hyper-pigmentation (PIH)
- These are dark spots on areas where inflammation was present, such as acne or scars
- Can also occur after peeling or laser treatments
- Common in darker skins
Photo-pigmentation or sun damage (Sunspots)
- These are dark spots caused by UV rays
- Common on lighter skins
Medical Treatments for Pigmentation of the Skin
- Reduce inflammation (topical natural anti-inflammatories & anti-oxidants such as berry extracts and VitC)
- Treat melanin in cells (laser or light therapies & peels, cryotherapy)
- Treat old cells containing pigment (fruit acids, peels, VitA)
- Prevent further melanin formation (topical ingredients inhibiting the process e.g.: licorice, bearberry, arbutin, kojic acid, etc.)
In conjunction, we use our knowledge in integrative medicine and prescribe supplements to help to reduce skin pigmentation in cases that cannot be treated with the above. During your procedure with us, we also educate you extensively to make sure you understand the importance of preventing skin from sun exposure, and that you fully understand the origin of your pigmentation.
At 8thSense, understanding pigmentation and its careful diagnosis is our priority. We strive to deliver appropriate, holistic and customized treatments for facial pigmentation to each individual patient.
