Botox has long been a trusted therapeutic choice for non-cosmetic treatments
like ophthalmic disorders associated with muscle over activity such as contractions
of the eyelids, cerebral palsy in children and excessive sweating. Its effectiveness in
enabling these patients to resume normal, everyday activity is astonishing.

Like many medical advances, the wrinkle-smoothing properties of Botox were
discovered by inquisitive physicians. One such physician, an ophthalmologist, using
injections of Botox to treat ophthalmic conditions in her patients, noticed how it
also helped to smooth away the lines around their eyes. Following 10 more years
of research and development, a remarkable new cosmetic treatment was born.
It is now the fastest-growing cosmetic procedure, used by hundreds of thousands
worldwide - women and men like you - who want to take control of their appearance
and look as good as they feel.

Repeated muscular contractions such as frowning and squinting form lines known as
dynamic wrinkles. Botox works by relaxing the muscles that cause dynamic
wrinkles giving the face a more relaxed and refreshed appearance. The procedure is
so simple and quick that patients can often have it done on their lunch hour.

What you need to know about Botox before starting?

Botox is a purified protein produced by the Clostridium Botulinum bacteria.
Although Botox is derived from a bacteria, it is able to be used for the
treatments described previously because it is applied in extremely small amounts and
when applied properly does not spread throughout the body.

A tiny amount of Botox is injected into the muscle that creates the dynamic
wrinkle. When injected into a muscle, it blocks the nerve impulse
from reaching that area, and as a result, the muscle relaxes. As the muscle relaxes,
the dynamic wrinkle overlying the muscle is smoothed away.

The most common areas for the use of Botox are the frown lines between the eyebrows
and on the forehead.

It can be used around eyes, to lift eyebrows corners, to smooth out neck wrinkles, for
gummy smile etc.

Botox does not "freeze" the face. It only relaxes the overactive muscle underneath the dynamic wrinkle. The other elements of facial expression remain active.

The effects of the treatments usually last three to four months, at which time another
injection is required(Three times a year). After several treatments, the effects
may begin to last longer.

Botox has been used safely and successfully for over 10 years. The amounts used
for wrinkle therapy are completely safe, provided that they are done by trained doctor.

There are very few restrictions regarding Botox treatments. Patients who are pregnant,
nursing or have a neurological disease, should not be treated. Patients should
discuss with their physician if treatments are appropriate for them.

A tiny amount of Botox is injected, very precisely, into the muscles being
treated. Because the needle is so fine and only a small amount of liquid is used, the pain
associated with the injections is minimal. Most patients compare the sensation to a bug
bite. No sedation or local anesthetic is required, and you can resume normal activities
immediately. You can even drive yourself home or back to the office. Some patients
experience a slight temporary bruising at the injection site. This can be covered with
make-up.
